Graduate Management Admission Test is a computer based standardized test that focuses on analyzing the analytical, written, quantitative, verbal and reading skills of a student so as to see if the student is fit for the management program or not such as MBA. It is conducted by Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). It helps the selection team, be it institute selection council or job selection council, to predict the success of the applicant in the management field.

GMAT structure

A GMAT exam consists of four sections that are –

  • Analytical writing assessment
  • Integrated reasoning
  • Quantitative section
  • Verbal section

Analytical Writing Assessment – 1 Topic – 30 minutes

Integrated Reasoning (Multi-Source Reasoning Graphics Interpretation) 12 Questions   – 30 minutes

8-minute break (depends on the student whether they want it or not)

Quantitative (Data Sufficiency Problem Solving) 37 Questions   –  75 minutes

8-minute break (depends on the student whether they want it or not)

Verbal   Reading (Comprehension Critical Reasoning Sentence Correction) 41 Questions    –   75 minutes

The total duration of the test would be approximately 3 hours – 30 minutes.

Total GMAT Score ranges from 200 – 800.

GMAT is conducted in two formats: computer-based and paper-based. In India, only the computer-based format is available.

GMAT can be taken once every 31 days. This includes test attempts in which the score was cancelled.

How to prepare for GMAT examination?

Although there are coaching institutes almost everywhere today but if an individual wants to prepare by himself then it is a tough task but not an impossible one. The first thing to do is to get to know the previous year questions as that would help you realize where do you stand? That would also help you to see in which parts are you strong and in which parts are you weak.

To enhance your reading skills reading a newspaper daily benefits you in most amazing ways. Not only does it improves your general knowledge but also enhances your vocabulary. Reading newspaper loudly and with correct pronunciation helps boost your confidence.

For logical reasoning there are numerous sites that offer mock tests that give your results instantly. Logical reasoning usually include questions that test your presence of mind and common sense.

Why should you sit in a GMAT examination?

Every student that aspires to go to the field of management he or she should definitely sit for this examination as almost every top Institute or University ask for GMAT score as their entrance criteria into the masters programme of management. Getting a good score in this test shows how ready and dedicated you are towards this field.

These scores are a must for graduates that are applying for jobs in top companies as a good score would benefit his or her resume.

How to apply?

Applicants may register for the GMAT either online at or by calling one of the test centers. To schedule an exam, an appointment is a must to be made at one of the designated test centers. The GMAT cannot be taken more than once within 31 days (even if the scores are canceled).

The GMAT exam is offered in 17 cities in India through 20 test centers (as of May, 2013)
