Six main reasons why one should opt for MBA after Engineering

Many may wonder if MBA is a good option after spending four years studying engineering. Though many may seem fazed with this decision and even thinking about doing an MBA after engineering may startle them.

I am here to break down the reasons why an MBA would be a good option after studying engineering but before I touch that part I would like to give a little insight to engineering

What is engineering all about?

Engineering is basically a course that covers subjects like mathematical applications, scientific and social knowledge in order to invent, create, design, develop and improve structures, machines, tools and other processes.

All over the world, there are specialized courses in engineering that can help develop a person in the field they want. Courses like aeronautical engineering, Mechanical engineering, computer engineering and so on are available but does an undergraduate course in engineering really make the cut? The answer to this is quite tricky because most of the times it doesn’t but if you’re lucky enough then yes.

Why don’t many engineering students do well in the market?

The problem with studying engineering is that the four years you spend studying, you actually don’t explore the market. You are so wound up with studying and passing your exams that you barely get time to practically implement what you’ve learned. Even if you do get time to do a couple of internships, you may still lack something.

What could you be lacking?

Engineering students basically do not know much about how a business works, they’re mostly integrated on to the technical part of their work and it is a shame that you spend four years working hard in college only to find out you cannot deal with the management part. Because of this, many engineering students are advised to do an MBA course.

What is an MBA degree and why should one opt for it after engineering?

MBA stands for Masters of Business Administration and there are different sectors in which you could do an MBA. Nowadays there are options of doing an MBA in Journalism, Advertising, PR, Finance, Marketing and so on.

A degree in MBA could help a person build managerial and business skills. Not only will you develop new skills but you will understand the basics do’s and don’ts of handling a business or how the market works. So now adding  to your technical skills you also have managerial/business skills that can help you advance in any sector or the sector you’re specialized in.

In other words, with an MBA degree you get to learn how to manage every aspect of running a business like the financing, accounting parts.

What is the harm in having multitasking abilities? You can get a better salary package and in a competitive market like today, it is very important for an employee to have multiple skills. Once you have enough experience, many big companies would die to have you on their team. Also, one must understand that management is an important aspect in an engineer’s life. Only because you are doing an MBA does not mean you’ll be leaving behind your technical skills.

You will be doing both; implementing your technical skills to build structures, tools or whatever you need to develop and manage what you are doing (in this case your business) at the same time. It will be easier for you to manage your clients as well.

Six main reasons why one should opt for MBA after Engineering

  1. The first and foremost reason one should opt for MBA is because of the career opportunities it provides. Once you have an MBA degree in hand, more career opportunities await you. What is better than having an array of jobs to choose from?
  2. The second reason one should opt for an MBA degree is because the pay is much better. You can earn a lot and you would not have to worry about being behind on your bills.
  3. Also, the chances of getting promoted are higher and faster. People with a regular MBA degree are often given more preference.
  4. You get to build better business consolidation networks. Once you are at the top level in your business, you get to make more contacts and very powerful ones too. Once you have established a high profile network, many clients will be running to you for your services.
  5. You get to grasp new skills and knowledge. Every field teaches you something new. You get to learn new skills and get more knowledge after getting a degree in MBA. An employer always looks for people who have more than one skill and have extensive knowledge. A master’s degree pushes you out of your comfort zone and exposes you to new skills that you should have thus it isn’t a bad idea pursuing a master’s degree if you want to be one step ahead of everyone else.
  6. You get a comprehensive perspective over the business world. You understand the A-Z’s of handling and managing businesses and projects. It is important to have an overview of handling and understanding a business. Today’s competitive market requires individuals who have a grip on everything.

Conclusion

If you have studied software engineering, mechanical engineering or aeronautical engineering, it would be advised to opt for MBA after your UG course. The benefits are quite promising. You won’t regret taking this decision.

I would also recommend engineering students to have some experience before applying for MBA or  you could work and study on the side.

A degree in MBA would actually help engineers not interest in the technical stuff to grow in the corporate world and even if you are interested in the technical field you can still opt for MBA to get better job opportunities and open new doors for yourself.

However, I cannot force anyone and everyone’s personal interest also plays an important role here therefore decide what you want to do in life and ask yourself if an MBA degree will benefit you.
