Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

This test is conducted by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and is aimed to measure skills such as verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills. GRE is standard computer based exam held at around 700 test centres in more than 160 countries all over the globe.
The test is of 3 hours and 45 minutes in duration consisting of around 5 sections for the computer based exam and 6 sections for the offline exam. Scores range between 130-170 (130 being the lowest possible score and 170 being the highest) and they are valid for five years.
Candidates are required to pay an exam fee amount of $195 every time they take the exam. The computer based exam is offered multiple times a year depending upon the test centre and the paper based exams are offered 3 times a year.
There are no prerequisites required for this exam and fluency of the English language is assumed from all candidates. Scores are used by most graduate schools in the USA and some schools elsewhere. These exams are primarily taken by holders of Bachelor degrees or undergraduates in their final year of the respective course. Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

This test is conducted by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and is aimed at testing the English language proficiency of the test taker for academic and other miscellaneous purposes. Typically the test can be taken over the internet else on paper and are held in 4500 test centres in over 165 countries.
The test consists of four sections to be taken in roughly four hours duration – Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. The internet based test has a score range of 0 to 120 whereas the paper based test has scores in the range of 310 to 677. These scores are valid for two years from the date of release. The internet based test maybe taken more than 50 times a year but abiding by the rule that candidates CANNOT retake the test more than once in a 12 day period.
Test takers will have to pay an amount between $160 and $250 depending upon the location of the test centre for internet based test. Paper based tests require that the test takers pay an amount of $160 as test fee.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

IELTS is a standard international test aimed for testing the English language proficiency of the test taker for academic and other purposes. It is jointly conducted by the British Council, IDP Education and Cambridge English Language Assessment. This test provides two modules – Academic Module and the General Training Module and a separate test called IELTS life skills.
1. IELTS Academic is taken by those for the purpose of admission into institutes of higher education and other academic purposes.
2. IELTS General Training is taken by those who are aiming to apply jobs or programmes that will enhance their working skills and add on to their work experience.
3. IELTS Life Skills exam is taken by those who need to prove their English skills for visa or immigration related matters.
The test has four different parts – listening, which is of about 30 minutes duration; Reading, which is of about 60 minutes duration; Writing which is of 60 minutes duration and Speaking which is about 11–14 minutes in duration thus making the total test time as 2 hours and 45 minutes.
This test is taken in over a thousand locations in over 140 countries around the world. IELTS Academic can be taken 48 times a year (4 times a month) and IELTS General Training can be taken 24 times a year (twice a month).
There is no minimum score required to pass the test. Applicants are simply graded on a scale from 0 to 9 where 0 means absent from test, 1 means non user and 9 means expert user. Scores are two years valid from the date of release. No prerequisites are required for taking such exams. An exam fee is required to be paid before undertaking of the exam which depends on the respective country’s currency.
